Setting Monthly Intentions + Journal Prompts

Note: If you enjoy video format better, find my new video here.

Well guys, it's the end of July already! Don't the months just fly by? Instead of a vlog and matching blog this week, I made a video about setting monthly intentions and how it can change your life, plus some journal prompts to get you started. I began setting monthly, or new moon intentions, fall of 2017 when I was looking to transform my life into something else. Since then, I noticed a huge shift in my life that I attribute to this simple exercise! It gets you thinking about your life and your passions, what you want to do with your life, and how you want to share with the world. I believe everyone has a story to tell, a purpose to help the collective, and this exercise helps so much.

Now you may be thinking, "Isn't this just superficial?" Let me share a bit about my story with this exercise. In fall 2017, I was living in my mom's basement because I was lost. I had no idea what was next or who I wanted to be. I took a deep dive into myself to find the answers. Who was I? What do I want to contribute to the world? Where am I now and how can I get there? You know, the deep questions... I saw the answers and dreamt up a really cool life for myself. But dreams are just dreams - you have to intend for them to come true. You have to do something about them, right? So I came across the act of setting monthly intentions. Each month, I wrote down a list of things, baby steps really, to get me to where I wanted to be - my vision. At the time, I wanted to write and publish a book, move out on my own, travel the world, and start a permaculture garden. When January came around, I decided to make a year intention list and set my intentions pretty high... and my life transformed completely in just that one year. I wrote and published not one, but two books, took a new job as an organic farm hand, and eventually moved across the country to where I am today. This wouldn't be possible without the power of intention setting.

"Isn't this just goal setting...?" My answer is no. When you set a goal, you have to struggle and work for that goal to come true (usually). Intention setting is more heart based. With intention setting, you write down in your journal your intentions and then leave it be. Don't look at it until you go to write next month's intentions. There is magic in this... like writing a letter to the Santa and sending it off, and then receiving what you asked for for Christmas. Two things need to happen when we do this - first is while we're writing down our intentions, we need to visualize them coming true. How would our lives feel if this was reality? Feeling is important in this exercise! The second is, as the month progresses, follow the intuitive calls, those bursts of passion that come to you. If you have an intention to write more music and you feel a burst of passion at midnight to play guitar, just do it! Don't worry about the time, don't worry about having to get up the next day. It's these little moments that arise and create sparks and inspiration within us. That is how the magic happens.

I've crafted up a few questions to get you started on your monthly intention journey. These are meant to connect with your heart and soul, to get to the core of you and to help you create the reality you desire.

1. What do you want to accomplish this month?

2. What problems in your life can you think of solutions for that you can work towards this month?

3. What new projects do you want to get started on this month?

4. What changes in your life do you want to jumpstart?

5. What have you been putting off that you can start this month?

6. What is something fun and exciting that you want to do this month?

7. What new habits do you want to start this month?

8. What are some next steps on projects you've already started?

9. Close your eyes and take 3 deep breaths. Ask your heart what it wants, needs, and the first thing that comes to you is the answer. Write this down. What steps can you take to fulfill your heart's desire?

I hope this post and these questions help you in some way! Leave me a comment sharing one intention you wrote down for this month below :)

As always, thank you for reading, and much love to you!
